What Makes Behavior ́Cultural ́? Re-Thinking the Human/Non-Human Divide in Anthropology - Archaeology & Anthropology
The concept of culture is pivotal in some of the most active academic and social debates of this century. The western view of culture as an exclusively human attribute is still hegemonic in disciplines such as social anthropology and archaeology. However, new definitions of culture have emerged from disciplines and studies into behavioral ecology, primatology and ethology, leading to a reconsideration of some of the theoretical foundations of these disciplines. Emergent studies into non-human primates are documenting non-genetically acquired behavior throughout the globe, springing debates in academia that will could have significant social and political implications.
