Sunscreen and Effects of Oxybenzone - Complimentary & Alternative Medicine

Spending time outdoors in the sun can be enjoyable but it can also come at a price, your health. Being out in the sun can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes [2]. We all hear about the importance of sunscreen as there are many sunscreen products touted for their high sun protection factor and  waterproof properties, which may sometimes be misleading for consumers. Not only that, but some sunscreen products contain harmful ingredients that can penetrate the skin and interrupt one’s own  hormone production (EWG, n.d.). One ingredient, Oxybenzone, is found in most sunscreens.  Oxybenzone is effective against protecting sunburn but it has also been found to be apotenthormone  disruptor [1]. This ingredient mimics estrogen in the bodies of humans, marine animals, and fish. This article will discuss product and ingredient recommendations to protect your health, the health of your family, and our environment, particularly, our oceans.

Sijunzi Tang, Codonopsis Pilosula Polysaccharide and Saccharomyces Boulardii Modulate the Gut Microbiome to Alleviate Dss-Induced Colitis in Mice - Complimentary & Alternative Medicine

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is usually considered to be more frequent in Western countries, but now a recent increase in the incidence and prevalence has been observed in China. Chinese herbal medicine as the main example of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely used by Chinese patients. However, the underlying mechanism of herbal medicine in alleviating IBD is still covered. The gut microbiome plays a key role in which has spurred the development of novel therapeutics aimed at restoring microbial community structure. So, probiotic represents another widely used CAM in treating IBD. Saccharomyces boulardii has showed great beneficial effect on diarrhea, but it is rarely used in IBD.In this study, we aim to evaluate the efficacy and elucidate the mechanisms of four potential CAM drugs named S. boulardii, SJZT, Dangshen [Codonopsis pilosula (French.) Nannf] polysaccharide or S. boulardii in combination with Dangshen polysaccharide during treatment with dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced mice colitis. The gut microbiome of mice before and post colitis treatments were performed by 16S rRNA-based microbiome analysis. All four drugs profoundly inhibited weight loss, colon shortening, and ameliorated histological damage as well as DSS-induced dysbiosis in mice. Beneficial bacteria– especially short chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing genera were remarkably enriched in the treated mice. Roseburia, Anaerovorax and Lactobacillus were selectively enriched by S. boulardii, while Butyrivibrio, Quinella and Anaerotruncus were selectively enriched by SJZT. Most notably, Dangshen polysaccharide selectively enriched Bifidobacterium, Arthrobacter, Akkermansia, Anaerovorax, Roseburia, Prevotella, Dialister, Megamonas, Faecalibacterium and Subdoligranulum. S. boulardii, Sijunzi decoction, and its main component, Dangshen polysaccharide, are effective in alleviating DSS-induced colitis. Furthermore, Dangshen polysaccharide is a powerful prebiotic that selectively promotes probiotic growth, especially SCFA-producing bacteria. These findings suggest that modulating the gut microbiome may be the common mechanism whereby these drugs improve colonic health.

Are Computer-Controlled, Pressure Modulated Knee Rehabilitation Machines Valuable Following Knee Arthroplasty? - Orthopedics Research

Constant passive motion (CPM) machines have been used for decades. Initially, CPMs were supposed to accelerate rehabilitation, including range of motion (ROM) and function following total  knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, numerous studies show the CPM lacks efficacy following TKAs  [1-5]. Here, we document a new computerized pressure modulated knee rehabilitatio (PMKR) device, an FDA Class 1 medical device, (the X10TM, Halley Orthopedics, Franklin, MI, United States of America) [Figure 1,2] that utilizes pressure to increase RoM and strength of patient’s affected knees.

Psychological Aspects of Enuresis in Childhood - Urology & Nephrology

Since approximately 10-15% of all children at age six years will have  primary  monosymptomatic  nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) [1], it is a common problem that presents to the general pediatrician and   often referred to the urologist or nephrologist. PMNE is defined as bedwetting in children older than age five years without lower urinary tract symptoms or bladder dysfunction [2], and  each year 15%  of children will outgrow the condition resulting in approximately 1% to 2% of adolescents still  suffering from the condition. Nearly all studies addressing PMNE reveal a strong genetic  predisposition at rates of familial history as high as 75% [3]. Since the 1990’s, the medical literature  has become replete with studies which focus on the psychological, psychosocial, and quality  of  life  issues that are associated with enuresis.

Effect of Infrared Radiation on the Hydrogen in Thin Films Double Barriers Based Melt Silicone-Germany - Material Science

Possibilities of plasma chemical deposition of α-Si1-x Gex:H (x=0÷1) films undoped and doped with PH3 or B2H6 have been analyzed from the viewpoint of their application in p-i-n structures of solar cell. The optical properties are considered, and the amount of hydrogen contained in those films is determined. The film properties are found to strongly depend on the film composition and the hydrogenation level. The number of hydrogen atoms in the films is varied by changing the gas mixture composition, and IR absorption in α-Si:H and α-Ge:H films is measured. The α-Si:H and а-Si0,88Ge1,2:H films were used to fabricate three-layer solar with an element area of 1,3 sm2 and an efficiency (η) of 9.5 %.

A Perspective of Food Access within the Developing World - Nutrition & Food Science

The paper explores how food production and accessibility has become problematic within the developing nations. The problem will be more acute in the years to come due to boosting  migrations  from  rural  areas. Mismanagement of food distribution and processing is  also  counted  as  an  issue.  Modernization of  agriculture could be recommended as a solution.  Hunger  and  shortage  of food have highly impacted the cities of developing countries to be unbearably densely  populated. The UN has positively recommended that food problem within  the developing world could  be  solved  only  if  improved  technologies are used. However, while more demands for food is  observed  today, more food needs to be produced. Similarly, as in urban areas more money is in circulation, people’s lifestyle is ever changing demanding  more  food  in  quantity  and  quality. Sustainable  agricultural revolution emphasizes on efforts to be made to ever raise yields to feed the increasing population. The paper points to the increasing number of world countries facing malnutrition creating challenges. They all need solutions and remedies.

The Future of the Use of Herbal Medicines in the Treatment of Cancer - Cancer Research & Clinical Imaging

Modern life puts humans in contact with various carcinogenic agents. The incidence of tumors in the world’s population has grown significantly in the 2000s. Lung tumors are one of the leading causes of death in the world WHO[1], and they are non-communicable diseases. Despite significant increase in cancer related mortality, lack of efforts to treat and prevent cancer especially in underdeveloped countries. The use of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is still a necessity in the treatment of neoplasms. However, these strategies have adverse effects that increase the morbidity of the cases. Another advantage in the use of substances of vegetal origin is its low toxicity, with side effects being minimal. Plant proteins by their adjuvant action may exert a synergistic action with the traditional treatments, improving the prognosis of the treatment of tumors.

Application of the Technique Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) in Pulmonary Metastases of Sarcomatoso Origin, Review of Highlighted Literature - Cancer Research & Clinical Imaging

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is a radiotherapy technique that provides radiation from many different positions around the body. The rays are focused on the tumor, with this we achieve that the lesion receives a high dose of radiation and the tissues around it receive a low dose, thus reducing the risk of side effects. It is applied between 1 and 5 sessions, and therefore it is possible to  reduce  the  treatment  time  compared  with  a  conventional  treatment.  This  radiation  therapy  is  also  called  stereotactic  ablative  radiotherapy (SABR).

Realization of A New Linear System Explaining the Fundamental Laws of Light and Energy in Infinite Spaces - Biostatistics & Biometric Applications

In  doing  this  work I try to better understand and understand relativity by giving it another form  that better describes the relation between the energy of a particle and the speed of light and I find a new parameter of time that I use it to explain deeper my theorem which is based on this newly exploiting aspect through a development of a special mathematical concept that gave me specific access to develop and bring out the energy theorem. I would also say that the theorem is a new mathematical and physical structure that are both linking and appropriate the speed of light remains the same my concept just explained the phenomena that we can find them in far galaxies or even in our galaxy, as for example the black hole because at the level of these giant physical bodies matter it exists only in the state of emptiness with enormous speed and infinite time. So, I try to give a new concept for this coast.

Leg Weaknesses and Lameness Assessment Methods in Broiler Chickens - Animal Husbandry & Dairy Science

In this study, firstly, a brief evolution of the chickens was mentioned and then ‘leg weakness’ and what leg weakness means in the broiler sector were investigated. “Leg weakness” is a vague term used to describe properties of infective and non-infective nature that occur in modern, fast-growing broilers. Modern broilers commercially grown are prone to foot problems, including lameness, footpad dermatitis and hock-burn. Lameness is an extensive term used for some damages of broiler chickens with infective and non-infective source. Lameness is a very big problem in the broiler industry. For the United State in 2002, the costs of lameness were predicted to be between $80 million and $120 million. However, in literature, it has been proven that the lameness strongly correlated with weight, growth rate and activity. The time before the chick reaches, a live weight of 1500 g was reduced from 120 days to 30 days in 80 years. As results of fast growing, severe problems have been occurred in broiler chickens. For example, the animals with severe problems have a reduced feed efficiency and lower growth. The carcass quality of these animals has also been decreased in value. Additional to the welfare problems that have been caused by leg problems, also financial losses have been occurred for the producers. Therefore, the first purpose of this study is created as to review the leg weaknesses of broilers and provides to readers a brief discussion of the factors influencing this problem. The second purpose of this study is to review the lameness and lameness assessment methods for broilers. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. At the end of this review, brief conclusions can be found with related reference list.

Comparison of Working Length Determination in Teeth with Vital Pulps with Digital Radiographs and Four Electronic Apex Locators. An In Vivo Study - Dentistry & Oral Health

The success of root canal treatment has to be done on the correct implementation of all stages of  the  procedure from diagnosis to the canal filling. Among these steps, the determination of working length (WL) is a challenge and depends on the anatomy of the root end. Filling root canals should not extend beyond the tooth apex. The apical constriction (AC), is a reasonable site for working length since it frequently corresponds with the constricted width of the canal [1,2]. Dummer PHM, et al. [3] recognized that it is hard to locate the AC in vivo with reliance because of its location.

Tracking Dogs Infected with Brucella Canis after Antibiotic Treatment - Animal Husbandry & Dairy Science

Brucella canis may cause infection of the sexual organs in male dogs, miscarriage in females and infertility or dyscospondilitis in both sexes. Prompt treatment of infection involves a round of antibiotics whose length and type vary. Different drug combinations have been used but relapse occurs shortly after therapy is discontinued. We report three cases of dogs with B. canis isolation and
positive serology that were neutered and treated with different antibiotic protocols separated by intervals of 30 days. Dogs were monitored  over  a  long  period  by  clinical  examination,  serology,  bacteriology  and  PCR.  One of  them  continued  to  show  positive  IELISA, RSAT and PCR in blood 3 years after the last treatment. Another canine showed positive urine PCR and this being an
important finding since the animal had been neutered almost 3 years ago. In spite of the small number of dogs, this report suggests the  importance  of  monitoring  positive  cases  and  of  taking  sanitary  measures to prevent spread of the disease and to adequately protect the human environment.

Secukinumab Associated with Acitretin in Generalized Pustular Psoriasis - Clinical Case Studies

Generalized pustular psoriasis, the most severe form of psoriasis, is a rare variant characterized by widespread sterile pustule associated with systemic inflammation. The disease lacks of specific treatment, drugs approved for plaque psoriasis are used in the clinical practice, with variable results. We present the case of a 41-year old woman affected by a severe form of generalized pustular
psoriasis, resistant to several therapies included Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonist; in our patient we decide to use acitretin plus Secukinumab, an IL-17 inhibitor. The association was effective, achieving the complete resolution of pustulation at month-2; the result was maintained for over 14 months of follow up. No adverse events related to therapy were observed. Generalized pustular psoriasis is related to IL-36RN mutations, which lead to upregulation in IL-36 signaling; IL-36 itself could promote IL-17 pathways. Our case demonstrates that targeting IL-17 eventually associated with systemic retinoids could be a valid therapeutic option for these patients.

Significance of General Practitioners and Nurses Diagnostic Skills in Managing Delirium in Elderly Patients - Neurology & Neuroscience

Delirium consists of a specific impairment of consciousness which occurs in elderly patients due to the physiological deterioration of  adaptive  abilities  and  adverse  effects  of  various  stimuli.  The  incidence of delirium varies between reviewed populations and may be underestimated due to diagnostic difficulties, the specificity of geriatric conditions and insufficient knowledge among healthcare providers. Delirium is often confused with the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), depression and disorders secondary to “geriatric giants” or somatic illnesses. The diagnostic criteria of delirium are listed by the authors of ICD-10 and DSM classifications. For general practitioners and nurses, proper diagnosis of delirium in elderly patients is a challenging process. Diagnosing delirium by non-qualified healthcare providers is facilitated by numerous psychometric and specialist tools and scales. The most common are: CAM – the Confusion  Assessment  Method, MDAS –  the Memorial  Delirium  Assessment  Scale;  DOSS – the Delirium Observation Screening Scale and the recently verified tool 4AT–the rapid assessment test for delirium. Proper diagnosis of delirium warrants optimization of care and stress reduction by formal and informal caregivers.

Forensics Usage of Video-Surveillance and Associated (Meta) Data - Forensic Science & Medicine

Forensic video analysis is the offline analysis of video aimed at finding video or digital evidence during an investigation. In order to find video evidence during an investigation (terrorism, kidnapping, homicide, ...), investigators need to analyze and watch large amounts of video data (equivalent to a high number of video hours). Despite the powerful existing techniques and algorithms for  video  processing, investigators are still facing  many  problems including  the  large  volume of video data and time consuming. The correct interpreta-tion of videos requires a set of accurate miscellaneous data called the metadata. Assessment of amplitude of accommodation (AA) in Owerri Municipal Council, Southeast, Nigeria - Ophthalmology & Vision Research

When fixation changes from far to near, the crystalline lens varies its focal length (refractive power) in response to changes in the vergence of the incident light. This process is known as accommodation. Amplitude of accommodation (AA) is the maximum refractive power the eyes can exert. It refers to a certain range of object distances for which the retinal image is as sharply focused as possible [1]. It remains a very important parameter in the diagnosis and treatment of accommodative anomalies, as well as the determination of reading addition of presbyopes. Accommodative anomalies are among the most common visual disorders, and they may be associated with symptoms, such as headache, asthenopia, pain in the eye, occasional diplopia, intermittent blurred vision, and swimming of print while reading [2].
